City History

Douglas County was first settled in 1858, the year that Minnesota gained statehood. That settlement did not last long, however, due to the Sioux uprisings in 1862. After those situations were settled and treaties were signed, 1866 brought about the official establishment of the county. The majority of commercial and population growth occurred in Alexandria, the county seat. To this day, the county continues to thrive, with a population of just over 36,000 residents.
